Which Winch is for Me?

Published: Saturday, June 5, 2021

In the boating world, the windlass is the standard for anchoring. However, for those who are looking for a more modern solution that tidies up the rope locker and offers hands-free retrieval, drum anchor winches are considered the most suitable replacement.

As with any new investment, researching quality, function, and the benefits of boating equipment and accessories can be confusing and tricky. At its simplest core though, the two cornerstones you need in order to select the best size anchor winch for your boat is already out on the dock: your boat and anchoring rope!

Let’s Start from the Very Beginning: Your Rope Configuration

Whether you have a ready configuration or still need to purchase the entire anchor kit, typically a scope three-times the depth of the water you’re boating in is standard practice. Aside from scope, there’s another factor to consider when determining the correct size anchor winch for your boat and that’s rope diameter.

While some boaters think that “bigger is better” when they see the various sizes and models of an E-Z Anchor Puller Hero, Patriot, or Rebel Series drum anchor winch, that’s not always the case. Let’s review the winches in general and then you’ll have a better idea!

First, every anchor winch motor and gearbox made by EZ Anchor Puller is patented and IP68 rated. Knowing how the winches are similar, you can then select which winch will be best for your anchoring needs:

The Hero series gearbox and motor is powder-coated aluminium and the bodies are 316 stainless steel.

  • Best for: If you boat in only freshwater, own a pontoon, or split your time between fresh and saltwater environments.

The Patriot series is completely manufactured from 316 stainless steel.

  • Best for: Harsh saltwater environments in shallower areas.

The Rebel series is completely manufactured from 316 stainless steel and is a true free-fall unit

Finally, refer to the table to find the model that works best for your boating needs AND has the capacity you need. Be sure to remember to add 10’-20 feet of chain to each rope capacity on the chart, keeping in mind that you may be able to add more.

Once you know which E-Z Anchor Puller anchor winch will work best for you, you can speak with an E-Z Anchor Puller representative to order your entire rope configuration over the phone and add it to your winch order! Always consult with an E-Z Anchor Puller tech support representative at 1.800.800.1640 if you need more than 20 feet of chain or have any other questions. E-Z Anchor Puller tech support is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. EST.
