TowBoatUS Comes to Michigan’s ‘Mitten Tip’

24/7 on-water assistance and towing for boaters, anglers

Published: Monday, June 29, 2020

Lower Michigan’s ‘Mitten Tip,’ where the waters of lakes Huron and Michigan swirl in the Straits of Mackinac, now has professional 24-hour on-water assistance available to recreational boaters. The newly opened TowBoatUS Mackinaw City is the 12th TowBoatUS location for owner Richard Lenardson, who began his company in 2006 with the opening of TowBoatUS St. Joseph, Michigan.

Lenardson’s growing boat towing business is part of a network of 43 Great Lakes locations and 300 ports nationwide that responded to more than 70,000 requests for assistance last year. Battery jumps, fuel drop-offs and tows back to a launch ramp or marina are the most common reasons boaters call TowBoatUS for help.

BoatUS offers on-water Unlimited Towing Memberships for freshwater boaters and anglers for just $85 per year. Boaters without BoatUS towing services face costs averaging $750 per towing incident, with some paying more. Included with Unlimited Towing membership are more than 25 Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) benefits and discounts, a subscription to BoatUS Magazine, free DSC-VHF radio registration, and more. Boaters with BoatUS Marine Insurance may choose to add Unlimited Freshwater Towing to their insured boat’s policy for just $36, cutting the price for on-water assistance by more than half.

Homeported at Straits State Harbor, the company’s red 24-hour response vessel is rigged for towing, jump-starts, fuel delivery and soft ungroundings and is easily recognizable with TowBoatUS logos emblazoned in white letters on each side.

All of the company’s towing captains are U.S. Coast Guard-licensed. Separate from BoatUS towing services, the company offers boat salvage and spill response services.

The fastest way to summon assistance from TowBoatUS Mackinaw City is to download the free BoatUS App, which connects boaters to the closest local towing captain. Additionally, the company can be reached at 269-605-9036, by hailing on VHF channel 16, or by phoning the BoatUS toll-free 24/7 Dispatch Center at 800-391-4869. More information can be found at BoatUS.com/Towing, or by calling 800-888-4869.
