Published: Monday, November 13, 2017
If you love the thrill of the chase and the sensation of victory, then add a twist to your next vacation charter and join in the racing regattas held annually throughout the Caribbean. These events will allow you to immerse yourself into the heart of the action, whether you choose to race or watch the excitement from your yacht. Afterwards, you can participate as much as you like in the social side of these regattas. Either way, you are in store for an exciting experience of a lifetime event. Here is an upcoming schedule of destinations this winter to experience this thrill!
First, a hurricane update: The Caribbean has been hammered by recent hurricane activity and rebuilding and recovery measures are well under way. We extend our thoughts and support to those affected, many of whom are directly or indirectly tied to working within the yacht charter industry. While the Virgin Islands, St. Martin, and Puerto Rico are some of the hardest hit, other islands such as Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua, and the Bahamas remain fully operational with minimal damage.
Grenada Sailing Week takes place January 29–Feb 03, 2018. It is described as upbeat and growing, increasingly competitive with loads of fun and a variety of entertainment. The location of this event is one of the Caribbean’s cleanest, safest, and friendliest islands, where racers and cruisers are made to feel extremely welcome by all. Offering a challenging mix of sailing conditions with more boats participating every year, this event is quickly being established as a “must-do” regatta in the Caribbean racing circuit.
As most of you will know, hurricane Irma left behind serious damage on the island of St. Martin, and the full recovery of the infrastructure and physical environment of the island will be a long and difficult process. The people of St. Martin are strong and dedicated, and the process of rebuilding has already begun with the sort of friendly determination for which the island is famous. The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta will go ahead March 1-4, 2018 with four days of world-class racing including some of the world’s most seasoned sailors from more than 35 countries. Crystal clear waters and cooling northeast trade winds provide pristine conditions for spectacular racing blending seamlessly into nights of exceptional parties.
The 2018 BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival is planning the 47th annual race, with new innovations, parties, and races this coming March 26-April 1 under a full moon. The waters of the British Virgin Islands will be filled with competitors from across the globe coming to the warm waters for races running through the 64 islands.
Known as the Caribbean’s hottest sailing week and one of the world’s premier racing regattas, Antigua Sailing Week is one of the world’s premier sailing regattas. Held from April 28 to May 5 in 2018, it marks the 51st annual event. This regatta for ocean going yachts attracts 100+ yachts ranging in size from 24 feet to over 100 feet with cruisers, racers, and professional sailors from all over the world. Antigua Sailing Week comprises five days of competitive racing for three to four hours daily. No description of Antigua Sailing Week is complete without a mention of the famous social scene. Post-race prize awards take place at the Antigua Yacht Club daily and are generally followed by bigger parties at the Yacht Club or in Nelson’s Dockyard. The final awards presentation takes place in Nelson’s Dockyard on Friday after the last day of racing. Celebrations and dancing continue late into the evening, providing Antigua Sailing Week with a glamorous finale.
