The Hardest Thing About Boating is…

Published: Wednesday, May 26, 2021

The saying goes “the hardest thing about boating is land” but, in reality, it is the dock—or another boat!

These hard things we’re discussing are solid objects that can impact and potentially damage your boat. After all, we have significant financial and emotional investments in our vessels and we go to great lengths to protect them. We insure them against the unexpected, clean them to protect from scratches, moisture, and hidden damage, and we cover and wax our boats to protect them from sun and weather damage. So, how do we protect our beauties from the most significant damage, that damage being an impact from solid objects like docks and other boats?

Regular bumpers and fenders provide inadequate protection, often not enough separation, and are limited to small sections of the boat or dock.Small bumpers can be hard themselves and the small size concentrates the load into the limited area it contacts. Conversely, inflatable Big Bumpers provide much better coverage, separation, and impact absorption, which all equals better protection for our boats.

Big Bumpers are made from reinforced PVC, which is very flexible and soft on surfaces meaning scratches due to rubbing are minimized. Their standard colors are an easy black or grey and the available covers or socks can provide even more surface protection as well as a simple, cost effective way to personalize your bumpers with your boat or business name.

Big Bumpers are available in 18” and 24” diameters and 2, 4, 6 and 12 foot lengths.

Taking a hint from the inflatable boat industry, Big Bumpers have a double seal (valve and cover/cap) which provides for long term, secure inflation. They are quickly inflated using conventional inflation pumps (manual or electric) and then quickly deflated with the same valve to provide for quick and easy storage onboard.

When it comes to bumpers or fenders, bigger is simply better!
