Service, Sales, Engines, Parts, and Transport - Everything You Could Need For Boating

Published: Friday, March 9, 2018

Dave Klick and Joanne Hilden, partners in life and business, are the owners of Blue Lagoon Boating Center. Having started their boat dealership in 2014, they are literally the new kids on the block in Harrison Township, also known as “Boat Town, USA.”

Both grew up boating on Lake St. Clair with their families and have continued boating throughout their lives. After years of working as a tooling engineer in the automotive field, Dave developed a passion for the marine industry. The economic downturn in the late 2000’s resulted in the loss of his job, and the opportunity to work in the marine industry presented itself out of the blue. Dave leased and ran a marina for six years. Joanne had been working in sales and marketing her entire life and had also lost her job. She was pursuing her marketing degree when she met Dave and assisted him at the marina. She urged Dave to think big and when their lease ran out at the end of 2013, they purchased a 35,000 sq. ft. building on the border of Harrison Township that was to house their sales and service departments, as well as indoor storage and their marine transport departments.

In 2014, Dave and Joanne acquired three boat lines and hired a few staff to assist them in their new endeavor. One of the brands is no longer manufactured but another one of those brands, Pioneer Boats, has turned into their premier line. It is produced by a family-owned company called Carolina Composites, headquartered in Walterborough, South Carolina. Their fiberglass center console and bay boats, ranging from 17'-26', are highly acclaimed for their unique manufacturing process called “the reverse shoebox.” Not many boat manufacturers use this process; you usually only see it from other high-quality boat builders such as Scout Boats. Yet, Pioneer Boats are known for their Carolina Flair, quality of fit and finish, as well as their roomy interiors and sexy lines. Owners of this brand love their boats so much they have a dedicated website and Facebook page called Pioneer Boat Owners Club.

Blue Lagoon opened a brand new showroom on Jefferson Ave. in Harrison Township in June of 2017 in order to have higher visibility than their other location could offer. That same year, they also acquired Smoker Craft aluminum fishing boats, another family-owned company and one that has been making aluminum boats ranging from 15' to 20' for over 100 years in Indiana. This year, 2018, Blue Lagoon now carries the Highfield Aluminum Boat brand. These quality inflatables and RIBs, from 8'-30', are made with an aluminum bottom making them lighter and stronger than fiberglass bottom brands.

Blue Lagoon Boating Center’s showroom also has a well stocked parts department which offers parts and service for Suzuki (authorized and certified full line dealer), Yamaha, Evinrude and Mercury outboard motors. They specialize in Suzuki re-powers and stock most models from 4hp-350hp on their showroom floor along with their three boat brands. Blue Lagoon has continued to hire seasoned professionals in order to expand their service department to cover not only outboards, but just about any marine engine or service boaters may need.

Blue Lagoon Boating Center has the goal of helping families experience the thrill of the water! Support this locally-grown, family business and stop by their showroom to check out their inventory, purchase outboard parts, book a service appointment or indoor storage space, and possibly ask for a quote for your marine transport needs! They are your one stop shop!
