ODNR Urges Boaters to Prioritize Safety When Purchasing Life Jackets
As boaters eagerly prepare for the upcoming “Boat Show Season,” to discover the latest in watersports gear, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is reminding everyone of the critical importance of wearing a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. While it may seem early to think about getting a new life jacket, now is the perfect time to ensure you’re ready to "Keep What Matters Afloat" when the season begins.
In recent years, ODNR has observed a troubling trend: the rising popularity of competition vests, or "comp vests," among towed watersports enthusiasts such as wakeboarders and water skiers. Although these vests are often marketed for their sleek design and freedom of movement, they come with serious risks.
Unlike U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, comp vests typically lack the necessary flotation to keep an unconscious person at the surface of the water. Despite their stylish appearance, these vests do not meet Ohio’s legal requirements—or those of many other states—and are illegal to use on Ohio’s waterways.
“Safety is our top priority,” said Cindy Bellar, Boating Law Administrator for the ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft. “While comp vests may be more expensive than traditional life jackets, they fall short of the safety standards needed to protect lives. Always check for the U.S. Coast Guard approval label when purchasing a personal flotation device. That label ensures compliance with Ohio’s laws and gives you peace of mind for a safe day on the water.”
Properly fitted and USCG-approved life jackets save lives. Whether you’re an experienced boater or just starting out, here are three key tips for choosing the right life jacket:
Look for the USCG Approval Label: Ensure the jacket is clearly marked as U.S. Coast Guard-approved.
Check the Fit: The jacket should fit snugly without restricting movement.
Match the Activity: Choose a life jacket designed for your specific boating activity.
Boating is a favorite pastime for many Ohioans, and ODNR encourages everyone to make safety their top priority this boat show season. Investing in the right gear now ensures every adventure on the water will be safe and enjoyable.
