DETROIT, MI - The Detroit Historical Society announced that the new Maritime Miniatures: The Art of the Ship Model exhibition is now open for viewing. The collection features more than 150 Great Lakes shipping models on display at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. The collection will be featured through May 8th, 2022.
This exhibition explores over 300 years of Great Lakes shipping industry history, starting with the oldest model in the Society's collection, the Mayflower, which was built in 1853—just a year after the launch of the actual vessel.
This is the first time in over 20 years that the ship models will be on display together. Some have been rarely seen due to age, size, or condition.
The Dossin Great Lakes Museum, located on Belle Isle, houses some 250,000 historical artifacts and is open to the public Friday-Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and children, and free for Detroit Historical Society members and children under 6 years old. For more information, visit www.detroithistorical.org
