LEDnDEL, LLC a Del Anderson company, in cooperation with strategic partners Green Millennium and KON Corporation have been working to develop photocatalytic coated LED lighting products that would reduce noxious and hazardous indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The materials involved in this project have been studied extensively with published results from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for the last several years, approved by the FDA, and recently the EPA for safety in 2018.

The following is an outline of these combined efforts and the progress made to develop a commercial application for the photocatalytic coating activated by LED visible light, for indoor air and outdoor water applications, and more recently in aiding the control of our coronavirus pandemic.

Combined Efforts and Progress Made

While developing a commercial application for the photocatalytic coating activated by LED visible light, for indoor air and outdoor water applications, and more recently in aiding the control of our coronavirus pandemic much effort was put into accelerating our progression.

Research into photocatalytic technology has been progressing for over three decades as explained in the NASA Stennis Space Center Coating Report published in 2012. Green Millennium and KON Corporation are listed as NASA project participants on page 23 of the report.

LEDnDEL, LLC a Del Anderson company, was included later through an exclusive agreement with Green Millennium and KON Corporation to develop LED lighting product applications for their photocatalytic coating. Photocatalytic Titanium Dioxide, has not only been found to remove Formaldehyde, Bacteria, including E Coli, Staph, Mold, Fungus, and Allergens, from the air when it contacts a coated surface, TIO2 photocatalytic coating will kill Corona Virus on contact, such as on a coated Face Mask, or on any surface including outer layer of clothing coated with TIO2 and activated by visual light, such as LED, or sunlight.

What is Photocatalysis?

Photo: phenomenon activated by the photons of light, having specifically a wavelength of 200-500+ nm (artificial or natural sunlight)

Catalyst: a material that is activated by an outside energy source but is not consumed or transformed by it.

The catalyst remains constantly available. In this case, the catalyst is made with Nanocrystalline particles of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and decomposes all organic molecule compounds.

Two Principles of Photocatalysis

Oxidative/reduction reaction processes - organic pollutants are destroyed (VOCs)
Hydrophilicity prevents residue buildup

The initial goals of the NASA project were to determine if the photocatalytic coating was effective in cleaning debris from the exterior of space craft. The testing proved to be very successful using photocatalytic TIO2 coating and create a self-cleaning coating of surface material. Sunlight activated, and washed off by the moisture in reentering the atmosphere, before landing.

Also, in the interior of the space craft photocatalytic coating of TIO2 activated by visual light cleaning the air of bacteria and viruses that the astronauts breath.

The photocatalytic TIO2 coating material is patented by the Japanese, and the application of the Japanese patented formula activated by visual light is patented in America, by YJBLED inc, another Del Anderson company, for application for cleaning the air and secondly- killing invasive species in the water.
