Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation Provides Untold Benefits for Sailors

Published: Wednesday, March 31, 2021

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation (LMSRF) is one of U.S. Sailing’s Regional Sailing Associations for Lake Michigan. LMSRF works to grow the number of boats on sailboat race starting lines through a wide-ranging assortment of initiatives.

LMSRF offers three types of membership: Individual—for boat owners and crew; Yacht Clubs—with a designated representative; and Corporate—with a designated representative.  They all work together to advance sailboat racing around Lake Michigan.

LMSRF provides many services including boat/crew matching, training, education, racing schedule coordination, and protest appeals adjudication as well as offshore, inshore, and youth championships, ladder events for US Sailing national championships, and qualification to represent LMSRF in the Richardson Trophy Match Race Championship of the Yacht Racing Union of the Great Lakes. Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation also runs a comprehensive website at

Obviously, members of LMSRF gain many benefits. Individual membership includes registration to the Best on Lake Michigan championships and the Area Boat of the Year championships. An additional benefit is that members are eligible to apply to the LMSRF Grants-in-Aid program. This program provides funds to individuals allowing them to compete away at major sailing championships, attend clinics, for training as a sailing instructor when they will be teaching at a member club, and more.

Among the many services that LMSRF provides is one exciting event: an online workshop for members featuring Team Roble/Shea, the U.S. 2020ne Tokyo Olympic Games 49erFX team. The workshop will include progress updates, racing and boat handling tips, thoughts on the Olympic path, and more from Stephanie Roble and Maggie Shea. These ladies are beneficiaries of grants from the LMSRF Grants-in-Aid program and are excited to be able to share this information with fellow sailors back here at home.

LMSRF, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, accepts equipment and boat donations through its Donations Committee and has an Annual Appeal campaign. All raised funds go into the endowment fund, which provides the capital for the Grants-in-Aid program.
