[Harrison Township, MI] – On Sunday, July 30 the Huron-Clinton Metroparks partnered with the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association to host a kid’s fishing tournament. The walleye association has been hosting the event for 20 years, but this year the Metroparks partnered with them to bring additional awareness and attendance to the event, and get more youth interested in angling. This year the event boasted over 119 youth anglers.

Kids of all ages were invited to come out to Lake St. Clair Metropark to try to catch the big one.  All registered youth participants were given a pole and tackle box to keep. Large and small fish were caught, as kids worked to reel in the biggest catch of the day. Prizes were awarded in serval categories, and fun was had by all.

Bob Barnes from the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association said, “The highlight of the day came in the form of a remarkable catch, a 24.25-inch catfish reeled in by the young angler, Maverick. This remarkable catch earned him not only a place in the event's history but also a special honor. The St. Clair Flats Taxidermy team will preserve Maverick's achievement by mounting the catfish. This trophy will serve as a tangible reminder of his fishing prowess and a source of inspiration for future generations of anglers.”

“It was great to partner with the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association to provide fishing opportunities for kids, who all left that day with a new fishing pole and tackle box so they can continue fishing on their own and build on their love of the sport,” said Joe Hall, park manager at Lake St. Clair Metropark.

“This year’s event not only succeeded in its mission of introducing young minds to the joys of fishing and outdoor exploration but also forged bonds within the community that are sure to last a lifetime. We can’t wait to start planning next year’s event,” said Barnes.
