Kasco De-icers Keep Docks & Marinas Ice-Free
Published: Tuesday, September 14, 2021
Keep your boats, docks, and marina safe from ice formation this winter with Kasco De-icers. As soon as it’s cold enough, anything in the water can easily freeze and be destroyed by ice expansion and jacking. Kasco de-icers create an ice-free area of open water at the surface, protecting your property from the damage ice can cause. This simple, efficient solution will save time and money and ensure a smooth start to next boating season.
As ice forms, it expands and contracts causing it to shift its position along with the position of anything it its way. This constant reformation can rip apart docks, push and pull pilings in different directions, damage boats, snap cables, and bend pipes.
De-icers keep ice away by pulling warmer water up from the bottom of the waterbody. As cold air settles in, the top layer of water decreases in temperature causing it to rise in the water column. Colder water on top and warmer water on bottom creates a thermal stratification, or layering, allowing colder water to turn to ice at the surface. De-icers work to break up this temperature difference and prevent ice from forming. Every dock or pier is different, but, in general, 4-6 ft. of depth is needed to allow enough space to break up a temperature difference.
Kasco De-icers are offered in 1/2, 3/4 and 1HP sizes, each clearing a larger amount of ice at the surface. Recent testing showed Kasco De-icers will move more water and keep a larger area ice-free than competitive units. De-icers are easily mounted with ropes or pipe mount kits off docks, slips, piers, or similar structures. Made with stainless steel components, Kasco De-icers are built to last in fresh water and salt water conditions and can withstand the coldest Midwest winters.
Kasco introduced the de-icer in 1968 after the founder needed an easier way to keep boats in the water over Minnesota’s frigid winters. Kasco has grown to be the company they are today by focusing on the best solution for the customer, continuous improvement, and unrivaled industry knowledge.
