Flying Scot North American Championship to be Held at North Cape Yacht Club in LaSalle, MI

The Flying Scot Sailing Association accepted North Cape Yacht Club's invitation to host their 2022 North American Championship and July 9-14 was chosen as the date for this regatta. A Flying Scot is a 19' daysailer that is sailed throughout North America. Fifty-one skippers from seventeen different states have registered for the NAC. In this group, nine were in the top ten in last year's North American Championship in RI. All boats will be on the grounds at North Cape, launching at 8AM each morning. A few sailors have chosen to camp on the property but most will be staying in LaSalle area hotels. Sailors begin to arrive on July 9 for measurements and boat preparations, and a Qualifying Series of up to 3 races will be sailed on Monday. The results of this Qualifying Series will determine a boat's placement in the Championship and Challenger divisions. The Final Series will take place Tuesday, July 12 through Thursday, July 14. Two races per day for the Championship and Challenger Divisions are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, and one race is scheduled for Thursday.
At the conclusion of racing, many perpetual class trophies will be awarded. Since this regatta is being held in close proximity to Toledo, the "Glass Capital of the World," engraved glassware prizes designed by NCYC will also be awarded. Onshore activities include a welcome reception, cornhole, volleyball, post-race refreshments, a Mexican dinner, a FS class meeting and dinner, local musician Mike Scott, the TSA steel drum band, and a summer-style cookout.
NCYC member Eric Gunderson is Regatta Chairman, and along with his wife Julie and a hard-working team of leaders, Eric has put together what will be the high-quality event NCYC is known for. North Cape has hosted many national events over the years, most recently the 2018 US Sailing Youth Championship and the 2022 Lake Erie Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta.
