Erie Islands Sailing School & Riverfront Yacht Sales Partner For Cleveland Sailing Location

Published: Tuesday, April 16, 2019

Erie Islands Sailing School and Riverfront Yacht Sales and Service will partner to bring American Sailing Association (ASA) sailing classes to the Cleveland area again in 2019. Tim McKenna, founder of Erie Islands Sailing School in 2012, says, “This partnership will provide Cleveland-area sailors with more options for all levels of sailing experience.”

Erie Islands Sailing School has its primary location in Sandusky, where the protected waters of Sandusky Bay provide a great place for the novice sailor, in addition to access to Lake Erie and its islands, which provide challenging and fun practice for the advanced sailing and cruising classes.

The partnership’s Cleveland location – located at the Edgewater Marina – will be up and running again in 2019 and offering entry level Basic Keelboat and intermediate level Basic Coastal Cruising classes. Additionally, opportunities for private lessons and corporate sailing events in the Cleveland area will be expanded, as well as the convenience for an experienced sailor to take a weekend charter to the islands – a great way to spend time sailing with family and friends.

Rob Morley, President of Riverfront Yacht Sales, and McKenna are excited about the opportunity to bring the ASA classes to Cleveland. “The ability to expand the access to sailing across the region is important to both organizations,” states Morley. “Professional adult sailing lessons in downtown Cleveland is long overdue.”

Established in 1985, Riverfront Yacht Services’ main office and facility is located on the Cuyahoga River. They offer boat storage inside and out, are a new boat dealer for Jeanneau sailboats, and provide complete boat brokerage and full service.

RYS is also affiliated with the Foundry Sailing Center, which offers racing to high school and college students, and works with Metro Parks for their adult ‘try it’ programs out of the old Coast Guard Station at the mouth of the river, accessed through Wendy Park.

"This partnership offers the new sailor an inexpensive way to try sailing and a convenient way to move forward into a more advanced program. After that, we can easily help get them more involved in sailing through boat ownership, whether as a sole owner in a new or good used boat or into one of the new fractional ownership programs being offered,” explains Morley. “We can offer assistance to any new boater - guidance, education, or ownership. Our main goal will be providing safe and fun sailing while leaving the new sailor the confidence to enjoy their boating season."

As a way of saying “thank you” to veterans and active military personnel, Erie Islands Sailing School is one of the ASA-affiliate schools that will be offering discounts during 2019. Throughout the year, military and their families can take advantage of a $50 discount off the price of the AS 101 Basic Keelboat class.
