With the effects of COVID in the rear mirror, the annual Annapolis Sailboat Show was once again under full sail. The largest sailboat-only show in North America, it fills the city’s downtown harbor with all things sailing, where large crowds navigated the docks and tents in search of that perfect boat or accessory. In my own walkabout during this year’s show, I found several new items of particular interest to any cruiser.
PaddlePump

If you rely on your dinghy, the new Paddle Pump would certainly be a clever addition. A combination paddle and pump, its extending two-piece adjustable arm can also pump the water out of your dinghy. Simply stick the bottom of the paddle blade into the water and pump the two pieces up and down to draw water through and out the top of the handle. It moves about a gallon of water with 10 pumps and can even top off the air in your dinghy. Once your feet are dry, lock the two pieces to your desired length and start paddling to the bar. www.paddlepumps.com
Fentertex Fenders

If you’re tired of using up so much precious storage space for fenders, the new Fendertex ultralight inflatable fenders are the solution. Up to 40% lighter than other inflatable fenders and 95% lighter than conventional PVC models, they can be quickly deflated and rolled into a small package for storage and then just as quickly reinflated using a standard air pump or mini air compressor. Their strong polyurethane air bladders are covered with a patented polyester textile that looks great, seems durable, and is specifically designed not to scuff your hull. www.pyiinc.com
Aquatabs Water Purification

Another interesting item for those looking for a simple way to get drinkable water from their somewhat sketchy onboard tanks is the new Aquatabs water purifying tablets. Simply drop in one effervescent tablet for every 4 gallons of water, wait 30 minutes and drink. It’s that simple. When used in clear water, they kill microorganisms, leading to a 99.9% reduction in bacteria, viruses, and giardia. They also sell test strips to confirm purification and an affordable little flow meter to attach to a hose to measure how many gallons were added for accurate treatment. www.aquamarinewatersolutions.com
Blu3 Tankless Diving Systems

If you’re not a diver but like to go underwater to look around or do maintenance, two new battery-operated tankless dive systems from Diveblu3 are the answer. Depending upon which of the two models you choose, you can dive down 30 feet and stay there for up to 90 minutes. Powered by a removable lithium-ion battery, they say that if you can charge a laptop, you can charge its batteries. www.diveblue3.com
