Onos Trading Company has launched Ernest Hemingway Polarized Performance Sunglasses, a bold see-and-be-seen collection inspired by the author's large life, world adventures and enduring literary works.
"Ernest Hemingway died in 1961 but his reputation as a literary giant and world adventurer lives on. Starting today his name also becomes a brand," said Chris Nelson, Onos national sales manager. "Ernest Hemingway sunglasses will share the glow of the man's enduring reputation."
Onos unveiled the Ernest Hemingway collection at a press conference in Las Vegas at ICAST, the sportfishing industry's major trade convention. Nelson introduced Patrick Hemingway, son of the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner.
"I look at the new Ernest Hemingway sunglasses and I think, yes, my father would choose to wear these and I think his characters would, too," said Hemingway. "And in my mind's eye I see these sunglasses on his characters like Jake Barnes, Santiago and Nick Adams." Barnes and Santiago were protagonists in Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea; Adams was the major character in numerous Hemingway short stories, including "Big Two-Hearted River."
Ernest Hemingway Polarized Performance Sunglasses will retail for less than $180 as single-focal "plano" sunglasses or as dual-focal sunglasses featuring standard upper lenses and low-profile bifocal readers with 1.50, 2.00 and 2.50 magnifications. Bifocal magnifiers help with close-up tasks like looking over a menu at an outdoor café, following a vacation walking-tour map, or reading Ernest Hemingway short stories on a poolside lounge chair.
Nelson said the new Ernest Hemingway collection includes models with HI-VEX Grey or HI-VEX Amber lenses with 100 percent eye protection from UVB and UVA rays. Frames fuse the styles of then and now, a traditional wayfarer look of Hemingway's era with a bold new-century look of wood, black and tortoise finishes on high-end Grilimad TR-90 frames.
Lovers of Ernest Hemingway's novels and short stories will recognize the people and places that identify the models – Pilar, Pamplona, Walloona, Irati, Torero, and Cojimar.
Pilar was the name of his modified sportfishing yacht as well as his nickname for wife Pauline. Pamplona hosts the running of the bulls and bullfight described in The Sun Also Rises. The Hemingway family vacationed on Walloona Lake near Petoskey, Michigan, and Hemingway fly-fished the Irati River in Spain. Torero is another Hemingway term for matador, and Cojimar is the small Cuban fishing village in The Old Man and the Sea.
The Ernest Hemingway sunglasses shared attention at ICAST with another collection of sunglasses in the Onos Trading Company portfolio, its well-known Onos brand. Onos pioneered low-profile bifocals to help people with presbyopia, sometimes called "aging eyes," to read, tie fishing knots, read trail maps and complete other close-up tasks in the great outdoors. Onos models include sunglasses with and without low-profile bifocals, plus direct-order prescription sunglasses.
