Tow Big or Tow Home

Boat trailers have a different purpose for everyone. Many boaters have boat trailers simply to store their boat during the “off season”, often considered to be a working cradle. However, trailers can provide an immense amount of freedom for boaters, allowing them to dictate when and where they travel with their boat(s). Due to customization in the trailering industry, boaters are now able to explore in ways that were previously unimaginable while also bringing along their personal water crafts and fun toys.

Unfortunately for many boaters, the fees charged by marinas and boat transporters continue to rise. As with most hobbies, boating is becoming more expensive in ways. On the other hand, strangely enough, buying a properly fitting boat trailer can not only save you money, but also provide you a sense of freedom!

Ten years ago, we typically built trailers for cruisers and fishing boats. Now, a normal request for us is for a trailer that will hold a 25’ boat and two jet skis, or a pontoon boat with a flatbed deck for a four-wheeler. We have also designed a combo trailer built to accommodate four personal water crafts and four kayaks. These are just examples of how the new age consumer wants to consolidate as much as possible onto one trailer to make traveling easier. These unique combo trailers eliminate the need for families to drive separately, towing two trailers.

Recently, we built a stack trailer for a customer. The bottom was for a speed boat, and the top was a rack with a custom winch for a jet ski. Because this customer tows the trailer behind a motorhome, he is limited with the amount of length he can tow. This trailer allowed his family to travel together instead of needing an extra vehicle to tow the second trailer. The stack trailer also enabled them to enjoy boating and jet skiing at the same time without having to sacrifice one or the other.

No longer does a boat trailer have to be “just a working cradle.” Now, they can be your means to an end. They can allow you to travel and explore, save money, be at your own mercy to do maintenance on your boat, have service work done wherever, and get to safety from an impending hurricane even! Boat trailers allow you to control your own destiny and provide you the freedom to boat when and where you want, without the marinas telling you that your season is from May 15–October 15. If you are like me, fall is my favorite time of year to boat, and often we have gorgeous boating weather well into November.

If you build it, you will use it. Allow yourself the freedom to play and explore, fish and water ski, do maintenance and bottom paint – all on your own schedule. Let your sails blow you where you want to go and take a deep breath knowing you are in control of the joy that lies ahead. You can rest assured that, with a properly fitting trailer, you are taking good care of your boat’s hull as well as safely accommodating your toys (if applicable).

Everything in the marine industry is evolving, including boat trailers. Now just might be the perfect time for you to educate yourself on the benefits and costs associated with getting a trailer built specific for your needs. Options are pretty much endless and it can be very liberating to see exactly how much fun you can have!
