The New Year Brings New Fishing Opportunities

Many view winter as a quiet time for the fishing industry in the Great Lakes region. While most fishing boats in the region have been put away until spring, that doesn’t mean that no fishing-related activity is going on. With the arrival of winter weather in January and February, many anglers are waiting for temperatures cold enough to form the ideal ice fishing conditions.

Even those who do not want to venture into the cold for ice fishing can still participate in the sport they love at this time of year, as there are many shows, expos, and educational opportunities related to fishing. These events provide chances for anglers to sharpen their skills, learn new techniques, converse with others interested in the sport, and stock up on new or improved equipment.

Those wanting to stay even closer to home can also look to magazines such as this one, and websites like GreatLakesFisherman.com, LakeOntarioUnited.com, and LakeErieUnited.com for a wealth of fishing information, regardless of the time of year!

There is still a lot of outdoor related activity throughout the Great Lakes, even at this time of year. Here are the latest fishing reports, as of the writing of this article:

Lake Ontario Fishing Report:

Good numbers of brown trout and steelhead have shown up in the streams and tributaries. Ice fishermen are getting excited for the early arrival of cold weather, and some of the bays are already freezing over.
