Sometimes It Really Is All About The Destination

We often hear “it is about the journey, not the destination.” This rings true in many cases but, when I think back to some of the most wonderful family vacations we have had, it honestly was more about the destination for me.

My parents have always made “family time” important and do everything in their power to ensure we get plenty of quality time together. Every Thanksgiving break my parents would rent a different house in Florida for my brother and I, and our significant others, to travel to. Along with a gorgeous oceanfront home, they would rent a boat and make sure the house had its own dock or lift. We would go straight to Publix grocery store from the airport and then head to our “home” for the week to come.

Then, in 2011, my parents purchased a wonderful, comfortable, beautiful home in Florida on the Gulf Coast. In the years following, we did our best to all gather together at some point for a week. As my brother’s family grew, and my family grew, it became more challenging to all meet at the same time, but we do still manage to rotate visits to see them while they winter in Florida.

One of my most fond memories from a visit to Florida was when we rented a home in Fort Myers Beach. The house was on a canal with its own lift, which we rented a deckboat to fill. Each morning it was tradition to head down to the dock to check for fish, dolphin, and manatee. Well, one fine morning, there was a magic manatee floating right at the swim platform of the boat. It was a life changing moment for me as I have always been in love with manatees. Sure, I had seen them before in the water, numerous times, but never so close I could touch them. She was magical, and, looking through our scrap books, those photos are definitely some of my favorites. I was in sweatpants and a T shirt (yes, that is what I had slept in) baking in the sun for over an hour, admiring my new friend.

The glory and beauty, the different aspects that water provides to all of us, is amazing. From the health benefits of pure water, to the amazing sea life living underneath, water is truly something to be valued and preserved and most definitely taken care of. The amount of joy being on the water has provided me over the years is unexplainable.

The destination can ultimately impact the quality of your adventure. The journey can be glorious and memorable, but sometimes, just sometimes, the destination provides that life changing moment that will forever remain ingrained in your mind and heart.
