Purchasing Or Maintaining A Boat? Take A Look At The Mechanical Aspect!

Many boaters have years of experience on the water, but considering that technology is so fast paced in all markets today, once in a while you may need to rely on an individual trained in the particular field you are researching. There is much information on the web, but it is always a good idea to team up with a technical advisor in your area to assist you whether you are buying a new boat or maintaining an existing one.
There are many things to consider about your boat, from bow to stern, not only at the time of purchase, but throughout ownership. As they say: “Sometimes you just don’t know what you don’t know.”
For example, although new engines require a less hourly maintenance schedule than older ones, they still need maintenance, and you do not want to let them go! Why exactly? Then, one can consider the question about whether to buy an inboard or sterndrive powered boat? Oh, and why do we see so many outboards now and what is the advantage? How much horsepower can really be put on a transom? Consider that in the early ‘80s, 175hp V-6 used to be the greatest thing, but now we see 400, 425, 450 and, yes, 600 hp+ being used in stock production outboards. What’s the advantages and disadvantages of such power? Plus, all of these options need computers for set ups, special tooling, and certified techs to keep you running. Point being: regardless of your sea time, there’s a lot you may not know.
Topics for upcoming articles will focus on engines, drive systems, fuel injection, high-performance components, electronics for ignition circuits, as well as accessories for steering controls on Axius and Optimus joystick piloting. I hope you will look for and join us in future issues!
