This is an exciting time of year for fishing enthusiasts, as the chance to get out on the open water is approaching! Watching the winter weather continue for weeks and months, it can seem like the warmer weather will never arrive. Just because we can’t always get out and fish during that time of year, it doesn’t mean that we weren’t thinking about fishing, and preparing for the upcoming season. Now that preparation can be put to use as we get back out on the water.
Something to think about with this new fishing season is the opportunity it provides to share the sport we love with those we love. Recreational fishing can provide a great way to get away from the day-to-day routine and spend some quality time reconnecting with those closest to us. Especially for those family members who may never have gone fishing, this season provides a chance for teaching others so that they may come to love the pastime too, or at least perhaps gain a better understanding of why we love it so much!
As of the writing of this article, here are the fishing reports from each of the Great Lakes:
Lake Ontario
Reports are coming in of good catches of brown trout as well as lake trout this time of year. Inside waters, 5-15 feet deep on the mudline, are producing good numbers of brown trout.
Lake Erie
We’re seeing reports of fantastic walleye catches. Reports state that large numbers of fish are biting, as opposed to large size fish, so far this year.
Lake Huron
Windy conditions caused ice fishing to end earlier in some areas. Anglers are currently reporting good catches of walleye.
Lake Michigan
We’re seeing reports of good size coho salmon. Anglers are also looking for lake trout according to reports.
Lake Superior
As the ice finishes melting for the season, those getting out on the water are seeing good sized lake trout.
Don’t forget that in addition to sharing your fishing knowledge with those you love, you can also share stories and discuss your favorite fishing tactics with other anglers.
