Public Meetings to be Held in Cadillac and Eastern UP to Discuss Fishing Regulation Proposals

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced two more meetings to discuss local and statewide fishing regulation proposals. The Central Lake Michigan Management Unit (Muskegon to Mackinaw City) in Fisheries Division has announced a meeting in Cadillac, and The Eastern Lake Superior Management Unit in Fisheries Division has announced meetings in Munising, Sault Ste. Marie and Newberry.
Meeting in Cadillac
This meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center (adjacent Mitchell State Park in Cadillac, on M-115 about ¼-mile north of the junction of M-55 and M-115).
Several local regulation proposals will be discussed at the meetings, including the following:
- Changing the single-hook size regulation on the Big Sable River (Hamlin Lake Dam downstream to Lake Michigan) to allow the use of treble hooks from November through August
- Changing the steelhead bag limit from three (3) fish per day to one (1) fish per day on the Platte River, from the Upper (hatchery) Platte River Weir downstream to Lake Michigan
- Changing the spawning closure on the Platte River from the U.S. 31 road crossing downstream to the confluence with Big Platte Lake, from March 1 to the last Saturday in April, to January 1 through March 31
- Changing the steelhead bag limit from three (3) fish per day to one (1) fish per day on the Little Manistee River from 300 feet upstream of the Little Manistee River Weir downstream to the confluence with Manistee Lake

Meetings in Munising, Sault Ste. Marie and Newberry
These meetings will be held on the following dates in the following locations:
- Thursday, April 5, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Cisler Center on the campus of Lake Superior State University, 621 West Easterday Ave., Sault Ste. Marie
- Thursday, April 12, at 7 p.m. at the library in the Tahquamenon Area School, 700 Newberry Ave., Newberry
- Wednesday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at Sydney's Restaurant, 400 Cedar St., Munising

At each area meeting throughout the state, everal statewide regulation proposals will be discussed, including the following:
- Brook trout daily possession limits for Upper Peninsula streams
- Northern pike size and possession limits
- Muskellunge size and possession limits
- Prohibiting the recreational take of the newly listed special concern species – queen snake and western lesser siren
More specific information regarding the above statewide proposals will be available at the public meetings and on the DNR’s website, www.michigan.gov/fishing. There will also be an opportunity to comment on these statewide proposals by email and through other public survey methods.
