Lac LaBelle State Harbor Boat Launch in Keweenaw County Reopens for Public Use

Published: Tuesday, June 14, 2011 3:00 pm

The boat launch at Lac LaBelle State Harbor in Keweenaw County has reopened for public use, the Department of Natural Resources announced today. A construction project to significantly improve the harbor is ongoing, but the boat launch will remain accessible while construction continues.

Due to the construction, a temporary access site and temporary vehicular maneuvering lanes may be in use. Public parking at the site will also be limited.

"We are pleased that public access to the boat launch has been restored, but considering the on-going construction, we are asking all launch users to operate in a cautious manner in an effort to avoid the construction areas and work zones," said DNR Parks and Recreation Division Regional Field Planner Keith Cheli. "Patience and consideration is appreciated as we work to improve the boating experience at Lac Labelle and Lake Superior's Keweenaw Bay."

The improvement project at Lac LaBelle State Harbor is financed through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Boating Infrastructure Grant Program and the Michigan State Waterways Fund. The Michigan State Waterways Fund is a restricted fund derived from boat registration fees and the Michigan marine fuel tax, which is used for the construction, operation and maintenance of recreational boating facilities, harbors and inland waterways.

The Recreation Passport has replaced motor vehicle permits for entry into Michigan state parks, recreation areas and state-administered boating access sites. This new way to fund Michigan's outdoor recreation opportunities also helps to preserve state forest campgrounds, trails, and historic and cultural sites in state parks, and provides park development grants to local communities. Michigan residents can purchase the Recreation Passport ($10 for motor vehicles; $5 for motorcycles) by checking "Yes" on their license plate renewal forms, or at any state park or recreation area. To learn more about the Recreation Passport, visit www.michigan.gov/recreationpassport or call 517-241-7275.

Non-resident motor vehicles must still display a valid Non-Resident Recreation Passport ($29 annual; $8 daily) to enter a Michigan state park, recreation area or state-administered boating access site, which can be purchased at any state park or recreation area, or through the Michigan e-Store at www.michigan.gov/estore.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr.
