Michigan’s fisheries are a big part of the state’s recreation, economic and environmental landscape, and managing those fisheries is no small task.
The Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Fisheries Division takes a regional approach – dividing the state’s waters into seven management units – which helps staff do its best work for fish populations, their habitat, and the angler community.
Communicating that work and the strategy behind it to the public is just as important. Annual newsletters detailing the fisheries management activities of southeast Michigan, the northeast Lower Peninsula and the eastern Upper Peninsula are now available on the DNR website at www.michigan.gov/fishing.
The 2014 Lake Erie Management Unit (LEMU) newsletter provides good information about fisheries management work completed during 2013. It takes a closer look at egg-take efforts; fish rearing, stocking, aging and disease monitoring; lake and stream surveys; special projects; and other activities.
The LEMU includes all or part of Hillsdale, Jackson, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. The LEMU manages lakes and streams within the Belle, Black, Clinton, Huron, Pine, Raisin and Rouge river watersheds.
The 2014 Northern Lake Huron Management Unit (NLHMU) newsletter covers fish surveys, Atlantic salmon rearing, habitat protection, walleye rearing and stocking, education and outreach efforts, habitat enhancements, and links to Status of the Fishery Reports. This newsletter also contains a detailed NLHMU map and contact information for Fisheries Division staff responsible for particular areas.
The NLHMU includes all or part of the following counties: Alcona, Alpena, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Chippewa, Crawford, Emmet, Iosco, Mackinac, Montmorency, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle, and Roscommon.
Anglers are reminded that fish survey reports on many public waters managed by the LEMU and the NLHMU are available from DNR Fisheries Division by calling 248-666-7443 (Waterford) or 989-732-3541 (Gaylord).
