The Tawas Point Lighthouse in East Tawas, Michigan, is looking for summer lighthouse keepers for its 2022 Lighthouse Keeper Program.

Tawas Point State Park is located on Lake Huron, in Iosco County, Michigan. The park boasts 193 campsites, several cabins, and scenic hiking trails, but the most idyllic feature of this state park is the Victorian-era lighthouse. The Tawas Point Lighthouse, built in 1876, has been operational for nearly 150 years, lies near the northern entrance to Saginaw Bay. The point and bay were both names for Chief O-ta-was, leader of the Saginaw band of Chippewas.

Each year, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources gives volunteers an option for a unique two week stay in the lighthouse in an immersive experience. Keepers are responsible for greeting visitors, giving tours, and performing general upkeep. In exchange they are provided two weeks of stay in the second-story living quarters of the light keeper's lodging, overlooking Lake Huron. Boarding includes two bedrooms, and a modern kitchen, shower, and bath.

Even more enticing are the two shipwrecks just off the Tawas Point shoreline, adding exciting more exciting history to the experience.

The Michigan DNR is accepting applications until February 11th. Applicants must be 18 years or older, and apply in groups of 4.
