As the shoreline shifts from the industrial silhouettes of larger cities to the quaint, white-trimmed houses of the historic district, you realize why this community is often called the "New England of the Great Lakes."
Boaters are drawn to Vermilion for its accessibility, its heritage and great fishing. Originally known as the "Village of Lake Captains," the town has spent centuries catering to those who make their living or spend their leisure time on the water. Today, the Harbour Town Historic District serves as the heart of the community, where Victorian, Italianate, and Queen Anne-style homes sit just blocks away from the docks.
Vermilion is also known as Harbour Town, and it lives up to that reputation every summer. For boaters, it offers a unique combination of deep-water access, protected river dockage, and a downtown area that is entirely walkable from the water. Whether you are coming in for a weekend getaway or looking to launch a rental for a day of sun and surf, Vermilion provides a coastal charm that is hard to find anywhere else in the Midwest.
Top Things to Do Near the Waterfront
1. Main Street Beach and the Vermilion Lighthouse
Just a short walk from the downtown docks, Main Street Beach is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. It features an observation deck with adirondack chairs, a sandy swimming area, new bath house, and the iconic Vermilion Lighthouse. While the original lighthouse was moved to Ontario, a faithful replica stands on the shore today, providing the perfect backdrop for photos and a reminder of the town’s maritime history.

2. Dining for Every Palate
Locations with docking available for the patrons:
Chez Francois: One of the most famous restaurants on the Great Lakes. Known for its exquisite French cuisine and upscale atmosphere, it is a frequent stop for boaters looking for a high-end night out. If you are looking for something more casual, Quaker Steak & Lube offers a lively atmosphere right on the river, allowing you to watch the boat traffic while enjoying their famous wings.
The Chart Room: A new location with nautical theme and selection of upscale bar fare and full bar and great atmosphere.
Har Bar: Located up the Vermilion River in Valley Harbor Marina is a very laid back tiki bar atmosphere oftentimes with music on Friday through Sunday.
For a quick treat, the town features several hand-dipped ice cream parlors, and soft serve at popular Romps Dairy Dock and a working vintage soda fountain that transports you back in time. The new unique Garage Bar and many more bars and grills. Also are small convenience stores for many food items to resupply your vessel.
3. Watercraft Rentals, Sightseeing and Fishing
Vermilion offers many ways to access the beautiful Vermilion River and Lake Erie. Boats for fishing, cruising, and sightseeing are available at Vermilion Marina, as well as Jet Ski rentals for your need for speed. The Mystic Belle paddlewheel boat offers a narrated trip through the lagoons and the river, sharing stories of the "Lake Captains" who once called these shores home. For a slower, more relaxing pace, kayaks and paddleboards are available at West River Paddling Company, which you can travel up the scenic Vermilion River. Charter fishing boats are in abundance at most all the city marinas, and if fishing for walleye and perch you will experience the best in the world.

4. Shopping in Harbour Town
The historic district is filled with unique boutiques, art galleries, and antique shops. Because the town is so compact, it is easy to spend an afternoon browsing without ever needing a car. You can find everything from nautical-themed home decor to high-end apparel within a few blocks of the water. So many popular shops including Brummer’s Homemade Chocolates and Swan Creek Candle Store.
5. Unique Place to Stay
If you would like to spend a night off of your boat and right in town, Vermilion has very unique Bed and Breakfast locations to stay. Inside an actual Jailhouse is The Old Vermilion Jailhouse where you can get locked behind bars. The newly converted old warehouse Breje Inn and many classic B&B’s in the Historic District offer something for everyone to spend a night or two.
6. Not-To-Miss Festivals and Events in Vermilion
Third Thursdays: Every 3rd Thursday of the month in the Summer, a large and unique and free music festival happens on all the downtown street corners and at the beach. A multitude of bands and musicians playing every imaginable genre of music.

Overnight Transient Dockage Available
The convenience factor cannot be overstated. Unlike many lakefront towns where the marina is isolated from the town center, Vermilion’s public and private docks are integrated directly into the local landscape. Once you tie up, you are within a five-minute walk of fine dining, casual bars, boutique shopping, and sandy beaches. Full fueling facilities exist for both gas and diesel with convenient access.
Here is a listing of some that may offer overnight dockage, though it is important to remember dockage upriver of the Blue Bridge has a bridge clearance which does vary.
Dockage North of the Bridge:
- Vermilion Municipal Docks - 20 berths for boats up to 45 feet, full facilities.
- McGarveys’s Landing - All size vessels, Large Yachts, full facilities.
- Restaurants mentioned above.
Dockage South of the Bridge:

If you are planning a trip, we recommend starting your day early to catch the sunrise over the lighthouse, spending the afternoon exploring the lagoons by boat, and finishing with a meal overlooking the river. From the sound of the rigging in the breeze to the taste of fresh perch and the sight of the sun setting over the breakwall, it is a place built for those who love the water.
