Often referred to as ‘Google maps for boats’ – navigation app savvy navvy rolls out much-requested Over the Horizon AIS features.
Marine technology company savvy navvy has introduced Over the Horizon AIS (OHA) in its most recent app update. OHA leverages the phone’s internet connection to relay real-time locations of nearby vessels directly to the app, significantly enhancing safety measures on the water.
Conventional AIS received from the transceiver onboard the boat typically covers only a few miles in range, whereas OHA extends this capability to provide users with information on vessels located further away, including those beyond the horizon. Although OHA relies on an internet connection, it offers the distinct advantage that boaters do not require extra hardware to access global vessel movement data.
“Not all boaters have AIS hardware on their boats. In fact, a recent study found that depending on the vessel type, 30 percent of boaters, and in some cases even as much as 75 percent, do not own AIS transceivers. But all of these boaters could benefit from Over the Horizon AIS to be able to see what’s around them and stay safe. This is why we prioritized the launch of OHA for our users. It’s all about making AIS more accessible to anyone on the water,” Jelte Liebrand, Founder and CEO of savvy navvy said.
The introduction of Over the Horizon AIS within savvy savvy enables users to visualize vessels directly on the chart, distinguishing between small and large crafts with distinct colors. Additionally, users can assess anchorage congestion, whether on board or during route planning from home. To enhance navigational safety, the savvy navvy app notifies users when a vessel’s position has not been received for over 30 seconds. Furthermore, clearly delineating the positional variance area around each vessel empowers users to maintain heightened vigilance during navigation.
“Our latest development will enable savvy navvy users around the globe to see areas of greater traffic and keep track of vessel locations around them for increased safety as one of their navigation tools. We’re pleased to hear how well it’s already been received,” Liebrand added.
