For more than 55 years, Steve and Doris Colgate’s Offshore Sailing School has taught over 150,000 adults and families how to sail. More than a statistic though is the impact that learning to sail has had on so many lives. Grandparents return to take courses with their grandchildren, providing the opportunity for three family generations to be together and enjoy time on the water, free from electronic devices and annoying distractions. And they’re learning a new lifetime skill, together. Solo sailors and couples take one course, then another, and another, sending Steve and Doris Colgate their thanks, along with photos and comments on their new “love” and adventure. Sailing instills a sense of freedom, while, at the same time, feelings of empowerment, confidence, and of taking charge of one’s destiny.

What’s unique to Offshore Sailing School is the full range of sailing courses and experiences that are offered, and you’re learning in “The Greatest Classroom in the World!®” Starting easy with basic learning-to-sail classes, there is also Performance Sailing and special racing events, even learning to bareboat charter aboard 40’-50’ monohulls, or sailing and power catamarans. For families, there are special value family sailing vacation packages available at resorts on Captiva Island and Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Called the ‘Tweens & Teens Learn Free’ package, up to three children (ages 7-17) learn for free with two adults.

In fact, Steve and Doris Colgate founded the principle of hosted sailing flotilla vacations nearly 47 years ago and have personally hosted more than 100 sailing vacations for Offshore Sailing School graduates in exotic ports such as Tonga, Tahiti, Spain, the Greek Islands, the Amalfi Coast of Italy, and plenty of Atlantic and West Coast trips in the U.S., along with perennial favorite: the many beautiful islands in the Caribbean. The company’s Colgate Sailing Adventures® invited Offshore Sailing School graduates, guests, and other experienced sailors to enjoy hosted sailing vacations in St. Lucia, the British Virgin Islands, Spain, and Croatia in 2019.
