The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District, has taken a significant step towards enhancing the vitality of Vermilion Harbor by awarding a $6.3 million contract to Chicago-based Architectural Consulting Group, Ltd.
This investment aims to repair the Vermilion Harbor West Pier, a crucial component of the local maritime infrastructure. The repairs, scheduled for this summer, are anticipated to play a pivotal role in maintaining the economic viability of the harbor, which currently contributes an estimated $6.9 million to the local economy.
The Vermilion Harbor West Pier, a structure with historical significance dating back to its construction in 1836, is set to undergo a comprehensive reconstruction. The project, spanning approximately 400 feet at the south end of the west pier along Wakefield MetroPark, will involve the installation of a soldier pile wall and sheet pile lagging connected to subsurface rock and bedrock. Additionally, the re-installation of cut stone to form revetments will be a crucial aspect of the rehabilitation.
Lieutenant Colonel Colby Krug, Commander of the Buffalo District, emphasized the critical importance of improving and maintaining navigation structures across Ohio. "Continuing to improve the condition and reliability of Vermilion’s piers is critical to their function," stated Lt. Col. Krug. "We’re proud to continue to improve and maintain navigation structures across Ohio, ensuring safety and navigation for both commercial and private vessels across the Great Lakes."
Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Energy and Water Subcommittee, highlighted the historical significance of the reconstruction work. She affirmed her commitment to ensuring federal dollars are used responsibly to rebuild maritime infrastructure, protecting Lake Erie and supporting coastal communities.
The project, scheduled to commence in May and conclude in the fall of 2024, will be 100% federally funded. Construction will be conducted by marine barges along the pier, utilizing portions of the federal navigation channel in the Vermilion River. While marine traffic will not be obstructed, boaters are advised to exercise caution during the construction period.
The Wakefield MetroPark, serving as a laydown and staging area for equipment and materials, will be closed during construction. Boaters are encouraged to plan accordingly and stay updated on any navigational advisories.
This initiative follows the Buffalo District's completion of $1.2 million in repairs to approximately 900 feet of the west pier in 2023, further demonstrating the commitment to maintaining and enhancing the region's maritime infrastructure.
Dredging of the Vermilion River federal navigation channel by USACE is also on the agenda, scheduled for July 2024. These combined efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to ensuring the long-term sustainability and functionality of Vermilion Harbor.
Vermilion Harbor, located on the south shore of Lake Erie, plays a vital role in supporting the local economy. Boating trips and annual craft spending generate an estimated $6.9 million in revenues, supporting accommodations, restaurants, retail, boat repair, and various services. Additionally, the harbor sustains 44.5 full-time equivalent jobs, $3.3 million in labor income, $4.4 million in gross regional product, and $7.3 million in economic output in the local impact area.
As the Buffalo District continues to deliver world-class engineering solutions to the Great Lakes Region, Vermilion Harbor's revitalization stands as a testament to the ongoing commitment to national security, environmental sustainability, water resource management, and emergency assistance during peace and war. Boaters and the local community eagerly anticipate the positive impact of these vital improvements to Vermilion Harbor West Pier.
