Red Wing, Minnesota

Published: Monday, May 31, 2021

Welcome to the "Big Turn" in the mighty Mississippi River. Known as the sharpest bend in the river for commercial traffic, you will find Bay Point Park on the corner of the riverbank calling out the beauty and tranquility that Red Wing, Minnesota, has to offer. From the beautiful bluffs, abundance of outdoor activities, historic sites, and world-famous boots, Red Wing offers a one-of-a-kind getaway. Make a day of it or an extended stay in order to take it all in yourself!

The majestic waterway is the home of an abundance of wildlife. Be sure to pack your binoculars as you will encounter bald eagles, blue herons, egrets, gulls, and bank swallows. Then, just south of Bay Point Park, the historic Boat House Village is stowed away behind Red Wing Marina. The Red Wing Yacht Club (privately owned boat houses) has provided limitless inspiration for artists and photographers over the years.

Moving six miles upstream of Red Wing, Lock and Dam No. 3 lies on the Upper Mississippi River and is open to commercial and pleasure crafts. The dam—with moveable gates, and a spot dike system maintaining the pool and commercial barge traffic—will enhance your respect for the operations found on this midwest waterway. Make sure to plan your trip accordingly and radio ahead for schedules.

Traveling through town via water, train, or car, there is so much to see and do. Make your reservation well in advance for a transient slip at O’le Miss Marina, Red Wing Marina, or Colvill.

Adventure enthusiasts enjoy hiking Barn Bluff, biking the Cannon Valley Trail, or walking blocks of family owned and operated boutiques. The “down-home” shopping experience draws you in for hours. Whether you are seeking unique souvenirs or looking for athletic apparel, there is something for everyone. Don’t miss taking a quick selfie with the largest boot, located within the Red Wing Shoe store, or scoop up a deal at the one-of-a- kind Duluth Trading Co. bargain basement. Tasty microbrews and fun branded swag can be purchased at Red Wing Brewery. Thrifty seekers always find treasures at the various 2nd hand stores and at the antique stores located within the historic Pottery Place building on Old West Main Street.

If you are looking to relax and enjoy nature, beautiful parks surround all the marinas. Make arrangements for a “to-go” order from one of the local restaurants and enjoy a beautiful dining experience on your own boat or within a natural setting.

Your entire family may be inspired through the local art and various learning experiences. Red Wing Arts is located within the Train Depot, Artisan Collective is located on Old West Main, and Art Reach can be found on 3rd St. If you have the desire to explore more than your feet can handle, reach out to the Red Wing Taxi Company (651-385-8294) to expand your journey.

Plan your trip by mapping out your adventure. Reference page 3 within the Visitor Guide. If you are seeking additional comfort and amenities, explore the many lodging facilities within walking distance of O’le Miss Marina on Levee Rd.
