Southeast, MI – Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in youth, and the Metroparks are partnering with other organizations in the region to close the gap so all children in the 5 county region can safely enjoy the pools, lakes, rivers, and ponds that make summer living in Michigan so great.

“Southeast Michigan has some of the best water recreation opportunities available, and the Metroparks along with our partners want everyone to have full access and feel safe when they are in the water, so we are grateful for the opportunity to partner with organizations throughout the region to improve swim safety for the children who live here,” shared Amy McMillan, director of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks. “We can accomplish more together than we can by working individually.”

Children will learn water safety and swimming skills at various locations this summer - for FREE! Participants will learn basic water safety skills and get an introduction to swimming. No prior experience is needed, certified instructors will work with participants at their level with ease and understanding of their comfort in the water.

Each lesson is 30-45 minutes and participants should plan to attend all lessons in their registered session. Registered participants will receive a swimsuit, swim caps, goggles, bag, and a towel.

Swim lessons are geared towards children ages 5 to 13, however teens and adults are welcome too. Any child under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Make sure to sign up soon. Spaces are limited to three remaining partner locations, Belle Isle State Park, Pontiac Lake Recreation Area and Highlander Aquatic & Fitness Center and some classes start as early as next week!
