After receiving a large grant through Michigan’s Marshall plan, with a partnership with MBIA and our Members to form the Michigan Boating Talent Consortium, The Great Lakes Boat Building School in Cedarville began their first Marine Service Technology Program in September with a full cohort of students (with a waiting list). Their program is partnered with Mercury University, requires 42 credits, and includes instruction in the classroom and in the shop, hands-on application in supervised lab time, and team and individual projects in the shop. Students who complete the program will receive a certificate from GLBBS, and will also be eligible to take an exam for ABYC certification.

Macomb Community College will begin their fast track, five-week education Marine Technician Program in October, in collaboration with the ABYC, MBIA and local marinas. Students will receive a certificate of completion and the OSHA 10-hour Maritime safety training is included in the program. Those who qualify can receive free tuition through Michigan Works! MCC has a long list of potential students interested in their program, and expects to run several Marine Tech Programs into next year to accommodate the demand.
