For the Love of Vexillology
Published: Friday, June 25, 2021
Ahoy! Here, at DEL Flags, we’re vexillologists, a fancy word that means we like to study the history, symbolism, and usage of flags. Vexillum is Latin for flag, and logia is Greek for study. We love flags of all shapes, sizes, and types.
Burgees
Could the word burgee derive from the archaic 18th Century English word burgess? Maybe! It means owner or master—in this case, of a ship.
At DEL Flags, we love to sew yacht club sailing burgees because we know how important they are! They represent your dedication to boating. That burgee is an extension of the pride and pleasure of sailing. A colorful burgee announces the joy of being on the water and of being part of a sail-loving community.
When a good wind hits the sails, those colors will wave, and we feel they should remain colorful and bold to catch the eye.
Signal Flags
Signal flags are a nautical alphabet that fly from boats to send messages to shore and other vessels. Flags with an A-Z code and pennants numbered 1-10 each convey meaning. Signal flags show in five colors: red, blue, yellow, black, and white. They are easy to read on water.
A one-flag signal is urgent. A two-flag message could mean distress. Three flags could provide direction. Longer messages can include up to seven flags.
The Yacht Club signal flag set from DEL Flags is made specifically for Yacht Race Clubs. Our Signal Boat Kit includes 22 flags and makes a great gift for any vessel. Individual signal flags can also be purchased.
What flags say makes them special, and our fabrics makes them durable. DEL Flags’ fabric lets flags ripple in the wind, keeps colors vibrant, and withstands wind, sun, and rain. Our quality ensures that you can proudly fly the flags you respect with pride.
