Ohio Ramps Up for Annual Aquatic Invasive Species Landing Blitz

Published: Thursday, June 25, 2026 9:00 am

The Ohio Clean Marinas Program, a partnership of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and Watercraft, the Ohio Coastal Management Program, and Ohio Sea Grant, is joining regional partners for the annual Great Lakes Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Landing Blitz, an international effort to educate boaters about aquatic invasive species.

Aquatic invasive species pose serious risks to Ohio’s waterways, economy, and outdoor recreation. These invasive plants and animals can clog boat propellers, rapidly overtake lakes and waterways, damage infrastructure, and outcompete native species for food and habitat. Many of these “aquatic hitchhikers” spread when boats and equipment move from one waterbody to another without being properly cleaned.

Boaters and outdoor enthusiasts play an important role in preventing the spread of invasive species by following the simple “Clean, Drain, Dry” steps before leaving the water:

  • Clean off all plants, animals, and mud from boats and equipment.
  • Drain water from bilges, live wells, ballast tanks, and other water-holding areas.
  • Dry boats and gear completely before entering another waterbody.

The Great Lakes AIS Landing Blitz will take place June 29-July 12 and will feature outreach events at boat ramps, marinas, and public spaces across Ohio. Visitors can participate in invasive species education activities, boat inspections, interactive naturalist programs, and species identification demonstrations.
