Want an exciting career working around boats, watercraft, and the marine industry around Lake Erie? EHOVE Career Center’s Marine Trades Technician Program is the place to jump start your career.
No experience? No problem. This hands on 600 hour course will start you with the basics and advance your skill level to begin your career as a Marine Technician.
The training journey starts with safety and orientation to marine trades. This is the first exposure for many students to the opportunities and crafts of the industry. Employability and communication skills are developed and enhanced in the course as they are vital to a technician’s success. Customer service and working in a shop environment are a focus of the training.
Power and hand tools are covered extensively as they are an important starting point for technicians. Problem solving, troubleshooting, and diagnosis begin as students learn about electrical systems, marine plumbing, electronics, and boat handling. Critical thinking and decision making are important skills that are developed as the training continues.
Engines and drive systems make up a lot of the time spent in the lab. Yamaha and Mercury industry curriculum leads to industry credentials that travel along the career path with each graduate. Inboards, out- boards, stern drive systems, and jet drives are extensively covered.
The course includes an 80 hour on-site internship with many training partner marinas in the area. Students gain hands-on work experience in many facets of the marine industry. Students will complete this intern- ship during the final weeks of the program. This is normally a busy time for local marinas so there’s no shortage of hands on training. The internship will also provide the student with an opportunity to exhibit their work and employability skills for potential employers and earn referrals.
Students of the EHOVE Marine Trades Technician Program come to us from many walks of life. Some are already in the marine industry and looking to improve their skills and certifications, but most are coming from restaurants, farms, offices, and more looking to get into the ex- citing world of being a marine technician.
Students are eligible to apply for Pell grants, federal student loans, scholarships, local WIOA funding and payment plans. Veterans education benefits can also be used to pay for the training.
To register for the training or questions about the program, please contact Jamie Starcher (Trades and Industry Training Coordinator) at 419-499-5293 or [email protected]. The next class begins on August 31!
