Announcing The Pelagic Autopilot
Published: Friday, April 5, 2019
Since its inception, the Pelagic Autopilot has received glowing reviews from sailors the world over, including many racers here in the Great Lakes region. The advanced features and robust construction of the Pelagic system is why, in January, Scanmar International, Inc. acquired the Pelagic Autopilot from Pelagic Autopilot, LLC, confidently assuming support for existing Pelagic customers, too.
The secret to Pelagic’s success lies in its design and sophistication. Developed by Brian Boschma, a well-known west coast racer with a tech background, the Pelagic was originally designed for single handers racing from California to Hawaii. Boschma, who has raced to Hawaii countless times, grew tired of burning out traditional autopilots, and felt the need for redundancy when sailing solo across the Pacific. It was on one of these voyages that the idea for the Pelagic Autopilot was born.
Utilizing nine orientation sensors to implement an internal compass, three gyros to measure vessel dynamics, and ruggedized components to deliver reliable performance, the Pelagic Autopilot is a paradigm shift in terms of performance and cost. For slightly more than the cost of a traditional tiller pilot, you can enjoy the sophistication of the Pelagic. Racers prefer it for its lightning-fast course correction and cruisers like it for its reliability and low cost.
In addition to its tiller pilot solution, the Pelagic can be used to upgrade your below decks solution, working with your existing below decks drive and replacing tired electronics. For the long-distance sailor, the Pelagic can interface with many popular wind vanes, including the Monitor, harnessing the power of the water to reduce power requirements.
