2019 Mills Trophy Race
Published: Wednesday, May 8, 2019
The Toledo Yacht Club and the Storm Trysail Club will host the 96th running of the Mills Trophy Race on Friday, June 7, 2019. The race from Toledo Harbor Light to Put-in-Bay will be sailed on the Mills Trophy Course, the Governor’s Course, or the President’s Course depending on the entrant’s class. The first class is scheduled to start at 5:00 pm.
Boats sailing on the Mills Trophy Course will be trying hard to unseat current Mills champion, Consigliere. Brad D’Arcangelo and crew have won the last three races.
The Mills Trophy Race is open to all sailboats sailed by members of clubs/associations affiliated with US Sailing. To qualify for the race, sailors are required to have a valid PHRF or Multi-hull rating certificate, to provide proof of insurance, and to comply with the safety requirements. Online registration and race documents are available at Yacht Scoring or through the Mills Trophy Race website.
Non-racing power and sailboats wishing to participate in the Mills Trophy Race, can register for the Cruising Fleet. The Cruise Fleet package includes two nights dockage at PIB, a sailor’s gift bag and access to the Sailor’s Party at PIBYC on Saturday afternoon. Registration information is available at the Mills Trophy Race website and entries are limited to space available.
On Wednesday, June 5, a banquet honoring the winners of the 2018 race will be held at Toledo Yacht Club. The after-dinner presentation will begin with the introduction of the 2019 Honorary Chairmen, Norm (posthumously) and Eric Winkel. This father/son team, long-time members of Sandusky Sailing Club, has a sustained history of sailboat racing on Lake Erie. From centerboards to PHRF, they have been a great example of intergenerational sailing.
Beginning at 6 pm Thursday, June 6, skippers, crew and other supporters will gather at TYC to enjoy an evening of refreshments, dancing and boat watching. Boats arriving during the festivities will be welcomed with the traditional cannon salute. All are welcome.
On Saturday, June 8, the festivities will resume at Put-in-Bay with sailors sharing their race experiences at PIBYC.
The weekend concludes with the Sunday morning breakfast at PIBYC, followed by the presentation of flags to the winners.
