The Safe Launch Drain Plug Reminder System was developed by Steve Colsher and Ray Haber—two Pennsylvania natives who enjoy spending their spare time boating on area lakes and the New Jersey shore. When Steve purchased his first boat a few years back, he approached Ray—his friend, colleague and an experienced skipper—with safety concerns related to launching his boat. Both Steve and Ray commiserated about the lengthy “to do” list boaters have to check off prior to launching, all while a line of other people wait to launch their boats. Ray warned Steve about the dangers of forgetting to replace his drain plug—something he had had personal experience with. Ray had nearly sunk his first boat by forgetting to replace the drain plug before he launched. Worried for the safety of his family and friends—not to mention the investment he had made in his Challenger 180 jet boat—Steve searched for devices that would remind him to replace the drain plug, but to no avail.
One day, while manning the barbeque at his house, Steve had a brainstorm: Why not create a mechanism that could be placed inside a boat's drain hole to remind boaters to replace the drain plug before they launched?
