I recently read an article, written quite a while ago, about 27 ways to save fuel and lower fuel costs while boating. If you have owned a boat you also know fuel costs typically are NOT the most expensive things to pay for, but definitely an area we need to address. Some of the "tips" include:
- Shed any extra gear for usage that day
- Run on the bottom half of the tanks (less fuel and water = less weight)
- Paint the bottom and keep cleanPick closer destinations or take one boat between friends (boat pool)
- On calm days take a slow cruise/on light chop days cruise on plain
- Try to go with the current/wind/waves (doesn't mention coming back!!!!)
- Watch your wave trail to notice if going off course (shortest distance between two spots is a straight line)
- Consider a fuel flow meter/tune engines/align drive train
- Tune propellers to usage
Some good advice, especially the last two suggestions. You will learn very good information about your vessel set up, your piloting and efficiency. The best fuel economy is at a slow pace on a calm day or up on plane with adequate RPM's to stay there. There is a misconception that if you just stay out of the 4 barrels you will save fuel. You WILL burn less, go faster and arrive sooner with more fuel left in the tank if you are up on plane. The new EFI (Electronic Fuel Injected) motors were designed to be more efficient between 3300-3800 RPM's! Similarly, Diesel motors are most efficient at 80-85% of full throttle rating.
- Some advantages of Prop Scan tuned propellers:
- Propellers matched to motors delivers the mostusable thrust
- Propellers matched to each other results inmaximum performance
- Matched and Tuned propellers DON"T GO OUT OFTUNE! Pay only once to get the best. Tuning costs are reimbursed by insurance company if claimed when damaged.
- Drive train life extended with elimination ofvibration
