SAVE THE DATE: Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Hydrofest
Date: August 27 - 29, 2021
Postponed to 2021 Due to COVID-19
The 2020 Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Hydrofest announces today that the 104-year old race will resume in 2021.
Race organizer, Mark Weber, President of Detroit Riverfront Events Inc. stated, “The City of Detroit’s caution amid the COVID-19 pandemic and current uncertainty for permitting organized events in 2020 will not allow for enough lead time to plan and execute the race.”
He continued, “We are fully supportive of City of Detroit leaders’ responsibility to keep residents and visitors safe. Mayor Duggan and City Council, led by Council President Brenda Jones have been great partners to the Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Hydrofest. We look forward to an exciting race weekend August 27-29th, 2021.”
The 2020 race weekend was to take place August 21 – 23rd. In addition to the races on Saturday and Sunday, race organizers had planned to host a “Riverfront Preview” night on Friday August 21st, which would have been open to visitors to preview the race grounds and enjoy the Detroit Riverfront. Race organizers are planning to host the preview night in 2021.
In 2019 Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Hydrofest was an all piston-powered event. It was the first year the Detroit race partnered with Quebec-based, Hydroplane Racing League. Plans for the 2021 race have not yet been determined.
As a tradition that spans over 100 years in Detroit, Hydroplane racing and its story is an important part of our region’s history. That history has helped birth a vibrant marine and boating industry locally and throughout the Great Lakes. Many of the accomplished hydroplane drivers today and in years past call Detroit or a neighboring area home. Most of all, the hydroplane races bring our community to the waterfront every summer to not only enjoy racing, but also the beauty of our special international waterfront. You are helping to tell that story.
In addition to the race itself, we will make announcements throughout the year to showcase a behind the scenes look at the industry, racing teams and the intense work done throughout the winter to get the hydroplanes ready for race season.
The 2020 event will showcase some exciting new features:
- Friday, August 21 will be a night to celebrate both sides of the river with food, music and open access to the beautiful Detroit waterfront.
- Saturday, August 22 is Family Day with plenty of racing and activities for the whole family.
- Sunday, August 23 is President’s Cup Day – the grand finale, as drivers race toward their final heats and determine who will be the winner.
