23149 AFTER 80 YEARS, A BETTER, SAFER WAY TO CONNECT TO SHORE POWER

Published: Tuesday, January 24, 2017

Back in the 1930s, when the traditional twist-type shore power connection was invented, boats were still made of wood and sails of canvas. These out-of-date, hazardous electrical devices are relatively unchanged and a common source of vessel fires. SmartPlug Systems provides a safer, innovative solution for modern boat owners.

The SmartPlug is a new way of thinking about dockside electrical connections. The inlet and connector have 20 times the metal contact than traditional twist-type plugs. This maximizes the electrical transfer, and reduces the arcing, resistance and resultant overheating that leads to fire.

With the SmartPlug, there's no fumbling getting the connector aligned just right. Asymmetrical, it pushes straight in—a godsend when it's dark or cold. And instead of a plastic collar that's hard to thread, it has dual locking levers that can be employed with one hand.

SmartPlug is easily installed. The inlet typically has the same cutout and mounting hole pattern as a traditional twist-type, boat side inlet. With a Retro-fit Kit, owners can utilize their existing cable. It's available in 30A/125V or 50A 125/250V.
