255DC

The 255DC is a 25-foot dual console offered by World Cat, the leading catamaran manufacturer, headquartered in Tarboro, NC. Length overall measures 24’6”, with a comfortable 8’6” beam. But beyond the basic specs, what does this model have between the gunwales? Just about everything. Before we review this model, however, let’s explain how a catamaran’s distinctive architecture allows it to deliver a variety of benefits like remarkable ride, stability, seating room, storage, efficiency, and shallow draft.

Most people know cats for their ultra-smooth ride, stability and “go anywhere, go anytime” versatility, but how they do it is the real story. The unique dual hull design slices through chop unlike any monohull boat, delivering the smoothest ride available in a wide array of conditions. A conventional monohull will typically pound as it bounces off waves like those that often spring up in the Great Lakes. It can make you think twice about heading out on a less-than-perfect day, and will likely shorten your boating season. With a catamaran dual hull design from World Cat, you will enjoy a smoother ride even in rougher water, letting you go out in all sorts of weather. This is the perfect solution to stretch your boating season, as well as your boating pleasure out on the water.  Thousands of boaters have discovered the advantages of cats over the last 20 years.

In addition to the ride, a cat’s rectangular footprint extends the beam all the way forward, resulting in more space for seating and storage. Space in the bow and cockpit is optimized, allowing more people on board and providing cockpit space to facilitate fishing. The deep dual hulls provide space to store gear smartly and efficiently. The 255DC is an example of how you can get more into a boat this size than a conventional monohull of similar length.

A cat also provides better distributed weight for a shallower draft (only 12” for the 255DC!), to let you get to skinny water for fishing, and increased stability ideal for taking on big waters safely and providing a stable platform for boarding, swimming, or fishing. The dual-hull design makes beaching the boat effortless, and generates more efficiency than a comparable monohull (over 2mph at cruise for the 255DC!).

Finally, wide-set dual motors allow great maneuverability for around the dock, provide the get-home security of redundant power, and provide space for the class-leading swim platform and ladder.

Because of all of these advantages, cats have become increasingly popular across the U.S., and are ideal for handling the fickle waters of the Great Lakes. Maybe you’ve been a monohull boater your whole life, or maybe you’re thinking about getting into boating for the first time. Either way, a World Cat catamaran may be the perfect fit for your lifestyle.

A Quick Tour of the 255DC

Bow - The 255DC seats 6 adults, or more, very comfortably up front, with lounging capability and stainless steel cup holders all around. The seating area is fully surrounded by coaming pads and a high bow rail, perfect for cruising. Storage is in the form of large, lockable dry storage boxes port and center, and another one starboard with rod storage capability. There’s also another large, lockable dry storage compartment in front of the helm console. Finally, there is a 14 lb anchor, free-fall windlass with 300’ of line and 15’ chain, and port and starboard anchor lockers. Access to the bow is through the three-piece walk-thru windshield.

Helm – An ergonomically-designed dash accommodates a 12” screen, and there is a 13” stainless steel steering wheel with power-assist. The captain’s comfort is ensured with a double-wide helm seat with flip-up bolsters and armrests (the seat is mirrored on the passenger side). A Fusion marine stereo with four JL Audio speakers, remote control, and Bluetooth is standard. All of this sits below a fiberglass hardtop with powder coated aluminum frame, overhead lights, rocket launchers, and spreader lights.

Head - The cat’s twin sponsons and outboard depth allows a head deeper than any monohulls of comparable length. The head includes a changing area and freshwater electric pump-out head with a 10-gallon holding tank. Perfect for the added comfort of your crew.

Cockpit/Transom - Behind the helm and passenger seats are a 30-gallon insulated livewell (starboard) and a 200-quart insulated fish box / cooler for keeping the catch of the day or your favorite beverages ice cold (port). Aft, a roomy cockpit allows great space for fishing, and is the ideal launch pad for on-the-water activities such as diving, snorkeling, and swimming. Port and starboard fold-down seats with backrest cushions provide additional seating. And beyond the transom door, World Cat offers the best swim platform and ladder system in a boat this size. Instead of a small, narrow retractable ladder, the 255DC has a wide platorm and a comfortable fold-up ladder complete with handrails. The overall effect is more like going up stairs rather than climbing a ladder. There’s a convenient pull-out fresh water shower to hose off after you’ve returned.

Behind every cat is something that makes it purr. For this model, as well as all World Cat models, it’s fuel efficient, dual Yamaha outboard engines. This 255DC takes dual Yamaha 150s for optimum performance.

While most equipment is standard, some options are a bow table and filler cushion, 15’ outriggers, and matching the hardtop underside color to the hull.
