Surviving the Great Lakes

Published: Tuesday, August 30, 2016

The Ditch Kit® offers peace of mind on unpredictable waters. There’s good reason they’re called the Great Lakes. Covering more than 90,000 square miles of surface area, the Great Lakes are not only immense, history has proven they can be unforgiving as well. That’s why boaters need to be prepared—just in case.

Ensuring boaters will safely survive what the Great Lakes and other bodies of water can hand out is the mission of Miami-based Global Survival Systems, which developed and markets The Ditch Kit®, a customizable safety and survival solution that brings peace of mind on unpredictable waters.

The Ditch Kit® was developed by Captain Dan Cohen, a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain, PADI divemaster, and rescue diver. His 30 years of boating experience led him to develop a top-of-the-line abandon ship kit that ensures boaters who face the worst know their safety and survival is covered by the best. “Every time one of our ditch kits goes out the door,” he says. “I know someone just dramatically improved their chances of being rescued in the event of an emergency.”

The Ditch Kit® is an ultra comprehensive safety and survival solution, custom-built for each individual customer. Every kit is anchored in safety and survival, and also features communication, navigation, medical, convenience, and repair components. The kits can be modified and tailored to meet the needs of private and commercial mariners as well as law enforcement and military agencies.

The kits offer everything from flares and whistles to sat phones, water makers, EPIRBs, and VHF radios. They are also buoyant and built with individual interior compartments ensuring that safety and survival gear always remains protected and in place. A lifetime product expiration notification service alerts owners when items in their kits, like flares, need to be replaced.

The Ditch Kit® can address the emergency needs of vessels ranging from coastal cruisers to ocean-crossing voyagers. SOLAS commercial kits built based on tonnage are also available upon request.
“Disaster never announces itself,” says Captain Dan Cohen, “we design and build every ditch kit as though our life depends on it because someday yours might.”
