The annual Sunset Bay Walleye Shoot Out is an annual professional walleye tournament held in Sunset Bay, New York on the Eastern Basin of Lake Erie. The 2017 event is the seventh year and sold out at 95 teams/boats. The 2017 event is slated for Saturday, July 22 with Big Fish Friday being that Friday, the 21st.Sunday is reserved for a foul weather/blow day.
The tournament is the highest paying, one day walleye tournament on all the Great Lakes, with this year’s event having the opportunity to crest over $125,000.00 in cash and prizes.
With anglers coming from 14 states to the Chautauqua county region, teams (boats) consist of two–five anglers, with a common nine-rod rule per boat. Each team can present up to six walleyes; total weight wins. The main event pays the top 15 spots. There is also a “largest walleye” segment paying five spots. With a side bet known as Big Fish Friday and four Calcutta options for the main event, teams are competing for a serious payday. In addition, teams also take great pride in joining the ranks of the previous champions and obtaining a spot on the custom stainless steel championship trophy.
The live interactive weigh-in show and stage located right on the beach at Cabana Sam’s along the shores of Lake Erie provide an unmatched venue for both the anglers and audience alike. The HOT seat format is an exciting style providing all teams a chance to share time on stage as a leading team until they are bumped off leaving the championship team standing. National and local television coverage will be on hand for this year’s event to be aired this fall providing even further excitement to the tournament.
