"Take Me Boating Toledo" Kicks Off National Safe Boating Week!

WHAT: “Take Me Boating Toledo” to kickoff National Safe Boating Week.

WHO: City of Toledo, Western Lake Erie Safe Boating Council, Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft, The Maritime Academy of Toledo, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Toledo Sail and Power Squadron, The Josh Project and local elected officials.

WHERE AND WHEN: Saturday, May 19 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Skyway Marina and The Maritime Academy of Toledo. Activities will take place on both sides of the Maumee River. Transportation and boat rides will be provided by the Sandpiper Boat.

WHY: This free family oriented event is to kickoff National Safe Boating Week and includes a special “Ready, Set, Wear It” event. Bring your life jacket and help set the world record for the most life jackets being worn and inflated at the same time. The goal is to increase awareness of the importance of wearing a life jacket while boating and other safe boating practices. The event is among a number of community events being held around the nation to celebrate National Safe Boating Week and to promote recreational boating safety.

HOW: Events include courtesy vessel safety inspections, live safety demonstrations, children’s activities, boats on display, and prize giveaways beginning at Noon. Life jacket wear and inflation event at 2 p.m. to help set world record, U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and flare demonstrations at 4 p.m., steer a ship simulator at 1:15 p.m., 3:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. This is a new National Safe Boating Week community kickoff event for the greater Toledo area.
