Port Hope Yacht Club’s sailing family celebrated the new year with a centuries-old tradition. Commodore Jan Marani and her executive hosted the Club’s first Levee. The meet-and-greet, with Club members, previous members, family and friends officially launched the club’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. MP Rick Norlock and his wife Judy, among the dignitaries on hand for the celebration, brought special greetings from Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The Levee, a tradition in Canada since 1646, is a special opportunity to get together with friends and family, and enjoy refreshments.

Visitors lined up to greet Commodore Marani and her executive and wish her and the club well as it celebrates 50 years of sailing and camaraderie. The club, adorned with gold and 50th anniversary decorations, was packed with guests.

"We’re planning a year celebration, with opportunities for members of the community to join us in our events" said the Commodore.

"Of course, one of the special events planned for this year is the August visit from our sister club of Brockport, New York.”

For over 40 years, Port Hope and Brockport Yacht Club have maintained a special sailing friendship, each taking turns to cross Lake Ontario and visit the other’s club. The Brockport Yacht Club is situated on the south-shore of Lake Ontario, almost directly south of Port Hope. This Canadian/American friendship grew as founding members of both clubs recognized how similar and amicable both clubs were. After four decades, this bond between the two clubs is as strong as ever.

While there will be numerous events throughout 2012, the next major event for the PHYC is Sail Past which occurs on Sunday, June 3rdwww.porthopeyachtclub.com
