Get Ready for Spring with Two Chances to Take a Boating Safety Course in Oakland County
Starting February 6th and March 5th, the Birmingham Power Squadron is offering America’s Boating Course® at two locations in Oakland County. Our Boating Safety Course will help keep your family safe and increase fun on Michigan’s. lakes and rivers. This professionally developed course provides boating safety skills for Sail, Power, PWC and Paddle Boat operators and covers nautical rules & regulations, boat handling, aids to navigation, boat trailering, charting techniques, and how to handle adverse conditions and emergencies. All students benefit: new boaters as well as experienced boaters who are looking for a refresher. As of October 2011, the Michigan age requirements have changed for operating a Personal Water Craft. These classes cover the changes and the Michigan DNR Boating Safety Certificate earned in the class will have you ready for PWC use under the new law.
Successful completion of our course earns students both a United States Power Squadron certificate and the Michigan DNR Boating Safety Certificate which can be used to for annual marine policy discounts with most insurance companies. The course includes a full color student text book, and offers students a free 6-month membership in the United States Power Squadrons as an added benefit. The February 6th class occurs weekly on Mondays, 7-9 pm, for eight weeks at Stoney Creek High School in Rochester Hills. Cost is $45 for student materials payable to the instructor, plus a $22 registration fee payable to Rochester Community Education. The March 5th class occurs weekly on Mondays, 7-9pm, for seven or eight weeks at West Bloomfield High School. Cost is $45 for student materials plus a small facility fee.

The Birmingham Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, is a non-profit, public service, educational organization serving all communities of Oakland County with Boating Safety and advanced marine education and, in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, provides annual Vessel Safety Checks, free to community boaters.
