Jerry Kyle, Sr. founded Great Lakes Scuttlebutt in 1992.
Jerry successfully published other boating magazines in the
past including Playbouy in the 1970’s and Roostertail’s in
the 1980’s, but Great Lakes Scuttlebutt was the publication
that really took off. The mission was to simply provide a
meeting place for boaters and boating businesses. As a
boater himself, this was an ideal career for Jerry who had
been a boater all his life. Everybody knows the importance
of doing what you like as a career and Jerry accomplished
just that.
Over the years, Great Lakes Scuttlebutt expanded on the
Great Lakes mainly focusing on Ohio and Michigan. In July of
2001, Jerry was confronted with the need of a heart
transplant and found he could not continue a one-man
business for Great Lakes Scuttlebutt. Therefore, Erik Kyle
took the helm in August 2001 and Jerry received his heart
transplant in late November 2001 (which went very well.)
Currently, Great Lakes Scuttlebutt has expanded even further
and is available on the coast of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie,
Lake St. Clair, Lake Huron (including Southern Georgian Bay)
and Lake Michigan. Our distribution objective is to provide
our boating publication to every marina, yacht club, boating
store, and any other marine-related businesses and reach as
many Great Lakes Boaters as possible. We simply try to
provide the best place for the Great Lakes Boater to find
the boating business they need.
